Bears Drop Fourth Straight

NEW LONDON, CONN.--(4/10/12)--Sophomore Derek Richards pitched eight solid innings and Babson scored six runs in the third inning to beat Coast Guard 9-5 in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game.

Babson locked up a NEWMAC tournament spot with the win improving to 15-11 overall and 10-5 in conference play while the Bears dropped their fourth straight to dip to 11-17 overall and 5-10 in the NEWMAC.

Richards and Coast Guard junior Derek Petty matched up for the second time in a week as Petty and the Bears beat the Beavers 25-3 on Wednesday.

Coast Guard got on the board first when junior Joe Petry stole home as part of a double steal for a 1-0 lead. The Beavers tied the game in the second on and RBI single by junior Conor Kortmann scoring senior Billy Miller who led off with a double.

Babson scored six runs on five hits in the third with senior Sean Cleary delivering a two-run single, junior John Botelho following with an RBI double before junior Pat Matvichuk lifted a sacrifice fly to center and freshman Dillon Gonzalez closed the scoring in the inning with an RBI double for a 7-1 lead.

Coast Guard got three back in the home half on an RBI singles by junior Nolan Gallagher and Eddie Kalankiewicz and an RBI ground out by sophomore Dave Wolinski to make the score 7-4.

Petty (2-4) lasted just three innings allowing nine hits and allowing seven earned runs in taking the loss. Senior Nick Peters pitched two scoreless innings before junior Riley Beecher allowed a pair of runs in two innings, one earned, both runs coming in the seventh as the Beavers extended the lead to 9-4 on an RBI single by junior Trevor Boyce before a three base error accounted for the second run.

Richards (2-3) went eight innings and retired the final seven batters he faced. He allowed seven hits and four earned runs while not walking a batter and striking out eight to get the win.

Coast Guard got a run in the ninth off Babson junior Kyle Lyon on an RBI single by junior Eric Gerken to close the scoring.

Junior Tyler Vieira pitched two scoreless innings of relief for the Bears allowing a pair of hits while striking out a batter, to keep the Bears close.

Gonzalez was 4 for 5 with a pair of doubles and two stolen bases while Miller was 3 for 5 with a double and two runs scored to lead Babson's 17 hit attack. Boyce, Cleary and Botelho each added two hits for the Beavers.

Senior Mike Salerno was 3 for 4 while Gerken and Petry each had two hits for Coast Guard
