Bears Win Slugfest and Series over Merchant Marine

FORT MYERS, FLA.--(3/5/12)--Junior Nolan Gallagher's two-run single in the eighth broke a 13-13 tie as Coast Guard rallied from a 7-2 deficit for a 16-13 win over rival Merchant Marine at the Gene Cusic Classic.

Coast Guard won two of the three games against Merchant Marine to win the important point in the race for the Superintendent's Trophy between the two military school rivals. Coast Guard now leads 6-4 with softball, tennis and sailing remaining this season.

The Bears rallied from an 8-2 deficit in game two on Sunday before falling 9-8. Merchant Marine scored seven runs, two earned in the bottom of the third to take a 7-2 lead before Coast Guard responded quickly with seven runs in the top of the fourth.

In the top of the fourth, senior Eddie Kalankiewicz had an RBI single, junior Ed Sella delivered and RBI double and junior Mike Massaro had an RBI triple. Senior Mike Salerno added a sacrifice fly while junior Tyler Babkiewich picked up an RBI with a bases loaded walk.

The Bears added one in the fifth on an RBI single by Sella and two more in the sixth on a two-run single by Massaro for a 12-7 lead.

Merchant Marine scored three in the sixth to pull to within 12-10 before a sacrifice fly in the seventh by sophomore Dave Wolinski pushed the lead to 13-10.

The Mariners tied the game in the home half of the seventh with three runs before junior closer Tyler Vieira got the final out to keep the game tied. Vieira pitched the final 2 1/3 innings allowing just one hit and fanning two to pickup his first win of the season.

Babkiewich was 4 for 4 with three runs scored and an RBI, Massaro had three hits and four RBI's while Gallagher and Sella each had two hits and two RBI's as the Bears finished with 15 hits.

Junior Riley Beecher started for Coast Guard and was touched for ten runs, five earned in 5 1/3 innings and freshman Blake Thompson allowed three runs in 1 1/3 innings in the first pitching appearance of his collegiate career.

Coast Guard improves to 2-2 on the season while the Mariners drop to 1-2.
