#11 Wheaton Edge Bears 2-1

NEW LONDON, CONN.--(3/23/12)--Junior Frank Holbrook allowed just one run and four hits as Wheaton, ranked 11th nationally, won its tenth straight beating Coast Guard 2-1 in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game, the first game of the three game series.

Junior Dan Gusovsky's two out RBI single in the seventh broke a 1-1 tie as the Lyons improved to 10-1 overall and 4-0 in conference play.

Coast Guard starter Derek Petty (1-2) worked seven innings and worked in and out of trouble, allowing 14 hits, all singles, but just the two earned runs while walking one and striking out seven.

Wheaton broke the scoreless tie in the fifth as sophomore Sean Ryan led off with a single, stole second, moved to third on a fly out and scored on an RBI single by freshman Apolinar De la Cruz.

The Bears tied the game in the sixth as junior Eric Gerken reached on a fielder's choice, moved to third on a single by junior Joe Petry and scored a deep sacrifice fly by junior Tyler Babkiewich.

Coast Guard threatened to tie the game in the ninth as Babkiewich led off with a walk, was bunted to second by senior Eddie Kalankiewicz and moved to third on a fly out, but a ground ball to second base ended the game.

Holbrook walked just one and struck out four to improve to 2-0 on the season.

Senior Hal Landers and Ryan each had three hits for Wheaton while junior Eric Jensen, De la Cruz, Gusovsky and senior John Keating each had two hits in the win.

Junior Tyler Vieira pitched the final two innings for the Bears and allowed just one hit while striking out two.

Coast Guard drops to 7-8 overall and 2-2 in conference play.

The teams wrap up the three game series with a doubleheader at Wheaton tomorrow at noon.
