NEW LONDON, Conn. --
Prior to today's action, the Bears celebrated their senior wrestlers:
Nikko Beato(San Diego, CA),
Jason Guglietta(Farmington, CT),
Owen Woolcott(State College, PA),
Mike Edwards(Glenpool, OK),
Nathan Fitt(Branchville, NJ),
Jacob Woodburn(Greensboro, NC),
Thomas Rhodes(Last Forest Park, WA),
Tristen Carbonell(Winter Park, FL),
Carl DiGiorgio(Doylestown, PA), and
Kevin Pandorf(Elmer, NJ). These men have each contributed to the immense success for Coast Guard wrestling over their four years in the program.Â
The celebration prior to the action continued right into the dual, with senior
Nikko Beato starting the day strong with a 19-3 technical fall victory to start the day. Western New England won the 133 and 141 bouts to take a 10-5 lead but the Bears bounced back to tie it up with a
Nathan Fitt 19-4 tech fall.Â
From there on out, the Bears would not lose another. At 157,
Tye Barker(Las Cruces, NM) battled through and beared down en route to a dominant 13-2 win.
Jacob Woodburn followed that up with a comfortable 11-4 win before
Thomas Rhodes brought the house down with a dramatic 7-5 decision. Rhodes trailed 5-4 with under 10 seconds to go but a last second take down brought the Bears faithful to their feet in eruption and gave Rhodes a senior day win he'll never forget.Â
Putting the finishing touches on the Bear win were 184
Caden Stout(St. Clairsville, OH), 197
Kevin Pandorf, and 285
Carl DiGiorgio. Stout won a convincing 16-1 tech fall, Pandorf took home a 10-3 senior day decision, and DiGiorgio closed out the day with a 23-6 tech fall that took just over a minute. In the end, the Bears won by a final score of 34-10.Â
The loss drops Western New England to 6-4 on the season. They will travel to Gorham, Maine next weekend for the Southern Maine Quads vs USM, Trinity College(CT), and Plymouth State.Â
Coast Guard improves to 7-4 in duals with the win. They will travel to NYU next weekend to face Bridgewater State and the host, #20 New York University.Â
