KINGS POINT, N.Y. —
The U.S. Coast Guard Academy women's soccer team played to a scoreless draw at their archnemesis U.S. Merchant Marine Academy on Saturday. Both sides combined for 21 shots and 11 corners throughout the match.
Coast Guard moves to 1-4-1 while Merchant Marine moves to 1-3-1. The Mariners are on the road at St. Joseph's University Long Island (2-1-1) for 6 p.m. Skyline Conference play in their next one.
The draw also keeps this year's race for the Superintendents' Cup even at 2-2-1. The Bears have earned points in women's cross country and volleyball, while Kings Point has claimed men's cross country and men's soccer.
The Mariners played the first shot of the game in the sixth minute as Sarah Welsch's attempt was stopped by
Julia Little (Pensacola, Fla.). Coast Guard followed with five consecutive tries, a testament to the aggressiveness of both the offense and defense on the day, the closest of which was an eighth minute
Mia Forti (Durham, Conn.) which hit crossbar.
Meren Zeliger (Farmington, Maine) also had a decent look in the 29th minute, but the ball was stopped by Kings Point goalie
Eva Fields. Merchant Marine was finally able to get three shots off within the final seven minutes of the half, with the final attempt in the 44th minute by Welsch culminating in a save by Little.
The teams were just about even in most areas through the first 45 minutes, but Coast Guard held the edges in shots taken (5-4) and corner kicks while Kings Point was whistled for more fouls (5-3).
Little also went band-for-band with Fields at that point, as both keepers recorded two saves in the first half, but she was swapped out with position-mate
Emma Acker (Springfield, Va.) at the start of the second.
Acker was almost immediately tested, saving a shot from Welch in the 54th minute, and made another save in the 67th, this time off the foot of
Ainsley Carlon, to keep it scoreless. The Mariners found frustration later after a pair of back-to-back shots in the 69th and 70th minutes following a corner were blocked. Another corner was set up after the second diverted boot, but another tries by Welsch missed wide left.
Neither team was able to break the scoreless stalemate over the ensuing 20 minutes. The Mariners upped the ante in the final 45, outdueling the Bears in shots (8-4) and corners (6-2) by the final horn; Coast Guard, on the other hand, turned up the aggressiveness in the second half and were whistled seven times to Kings Point's four.
Little and Acker finished with a combined four saves during the day, while Forti had the most shots on the team with three. Her, Zeliger, and
Ellie Millner (Woodbridge, Va.) were the three Bears to register a shot on goal.
Bears women's soccer looks to break their brief winless streak on Wednesday, September 17th, at Wentworth Institute of Technology; the game is set for a 6 p.m. kick-off. Last season's meeting in New London saw the teams tie at two.
