BOSTON, Mass. —
In a midweek match-up in Boston, the U.S. Coast Guard Academy women's soccer team matched hosts Wentworth Institute of Technology at every step to head home with a scoreless tie.
Coast Guard moves to 1-4-2, while Wentworth moves to 3-1-3. The Leopards will see their next dose of action on Saturday as they head to Milton for a CNE row at Curry College (2-3).
Bears starter between the posts
Julia Little (Pensacola, Fla.) was put to work almost immediately with Wentworth firing twice on goal within the first five minutes, both of which were saved by the junior. The first to attempts for Coast Guard were played by
Arwen Wise (Weathorford, Tex.), who missed wide left on both attempts.
After being held to just four shots during the entire first half, Coast Guard came out of halftime with acute aggressiveness. Team captain
Mia Forti (Madison, Conn.) fired the first two in the 47th minute, missing wide right and high. The Bears found opportunities on back-to-back corners in the 52nd and 54th, but Forti's attempt following the second corner was saved by Leopards net-minder
Shyla Kulesza, who deterred a shot by
Bianca McIntosh (Woodbridge, Va.) in the same minute to keep the game scoreless.
The teams were nearly even on multiple fronts as Wentworth wound up with a slight 14-13 edge in shots taken and a 5-3 in shots on goal to balance out Coast Guard's 4-2 advantage on the corners. The Bears were called for eight fouls to the Leopards' three, while Little outperformed Kulesza in saves by a 5-3 margin.
Bears women's soccer will be back at Nitchman Field this Saturday for their next one as they host Wellesley College (3-2-1) in their NEWMAC opener. Coast Guard won last year's contest, 1-0, thanks to a 67th minute free kick goal off of the boot of
Bella Brittain (Woodbridge, Va.).
