Wildsmith Wins High Jump at NEICAAA Championships and Phillips Breaks CGA 5K Record at FIRE Meet

The Coast Guard Academy women's track & field team as represented between two events this weekend — the NEICAAA Championships at UMass Amherst and the Farley Inter Regional Extravaganza at Williams College.

AMHERST, Mass. — Competing at UMass Amherst was junior Allie Wildsmith (Bainbridge Island, Wash.), who won the high jump to earn New England Champion status. All events at this year's NEICAAA Championships were contested on Saturday, instead of the planned two-day format, due to consistent rainfall in Western Massachusetts.

Wildsmith entered the event as the top seed and went head-to-head with UMass senior Courtney Roland. Roland was able to match Wildsmith through a height of 1.75 meters (5' 8.75") before failing to convert all three of her jumps at 1.78m (5' 10"); Wildsmith cleared the height in one try, matching the Coast Guard outdoor high jump record she set earlier in the season.

The junior attempted to break the school record by clearing 1.81m (5' 11.25") but was unable to convert in three attempts. She still maintains the top seed for Nationals.

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The annual Farley Inter Regional Extravaganza remained a two-day meet with some of Friday's events moved to Saturday due to weather.

Senior thrower Maureen Hammond (Downington, Pa.) was the lone Bears athlete appearing on Friday, finishing 13th in javelin with a best throw of 27.93m (91' 8"). Hammond returned on Saturday to compete in the shot put, in which she was also placed 13th with a best throw of 11.18m (36' 8.25").

The Bears' top finisher at the meet was senior captain Paige Phillips (Wilmington, N.C.), who set a new program standard in the 5000m with her fourth-place time of 16:45.91. Also competing in the 5K was junior Claire Semerod (Centennial, Colo.), who placed 17th at 17:53.72.

Junior sprinter Alaina Stonebraker (Sandy, Utah) set two new personal bests at the meet. She was fifth in the 200m at 25.14 and ninth in the 400m at 58.00, with her 400 time moving her up fourth on the program's all-time leaderboard.

Also moving up to fourth on an all-time list was sophomore Kate Stebbins (Chapin, S.C.), who placed 18th in the 800m at a personal record 2:18.00. Finishing ahead of Stebbins in the race was senior Sophia White (Guley, Ala.) in 12th at 2:15.70.

Bears women's track & field is gearing up for the upcoming Last Chance Weekend, during which they'll be competing at MIT's Final Qualifier. The meet will be a one-day event held this Thursday, May 15th, with the start time expected to be around 10:00 AM.
