BOSTON, Mass. --
Coast Guard kicked off the spring racing season this weekend in Boston, matching up against MIT in the Charles River Basin. Leading off the day was the Women's Varsity 8. With a strong start, Coast Guard was able to hold contact with MIT for the first 800 meters of the race, but were ultimately unable to match the speed of the MIT crew. MIT won with a time of with 7:35 and Coast Guard following with a time of 8:08. As the racing continued, conditions worsened but the Coast Guard 2V8 managed the increasing winds in stride. With their 0912 start time, the 2V8 race saw wind speeds of 12mph with heavy gusts, leading to white caps at the start. After a tough start to the race, Coast Guard found their rhythm but ultimately it would not be enough to come back to MIT. MIT crossed the line in a time of 7:51 with Coast Guard following in 8:39. The final race of the day was the 3V8/4V8 event. With conditions only slightly improved, it was a challenge for all boats. Both Coast Guard crews powered through the first 1000 meters in the choppy water, then found improved speed through the second half of the race. Unfortunately, both crews were not able to close the gap to MIT. The MIT 3V finished the race in 7:56, with the Coast Guard 3V clocking in at 8:28, followed by the CG 4V at 9:15.Â
