BABSON PARK, Mass. - Coast Guard women's lacrosse took a tough loss in their conference opener today, falling in a 3-18 final slate at no. 13 Babson.
Coast Guard moves to 2-2 (0-1 NEWMAC), while Babson improves to 1-1 (1-0 NEWMAC). The Beavers will head to Roger Williams (2-4) for non-conference action.
Caitlyn Coates (Hanover, Pa.),
Laine Weber (Granite Bay, Calif.), and
Rileigh Leary (Holden, Mass.) were the Bears' scorers, all unassisted.
Babson found the net ten times in the first quarter while shutting out their guests. They'd score one more at 11:16, and the game went almost eight minutes without a goal until Weber got it between the sticks with 3:41 remaining. The Beavers added two more before halftime to extend their lead to 13-1 at the break. They all four goals in the third and their last one with 12:47 in the fourth, while Coates and Leary would get in the goal column with 6:59 and 3:23 on the clock, respectively, to close out the game.
Coast Guard was held to just 12 shots in the game while Babson was able to attempt 35. The Beavers also held advantages in turnovers (13-21), ground balls (18-10), and draw controls (12-10); the Bears were more successful in clears, going 14-for-18 while the hosts went 13-for-15.
Gabriella Kraus-Rivera (West Linn, Oreg.) and
Rowan Walsh (Hampstead, Md.) reigned in three ground balls each for Coast Guard, while
Ella Campbell (Foxborough, Mass.) and
Riley Demory (Arlington, Va.) both caused a pair of turnovers. Campbell also recorded six draw controls in the match. Babson benefited from a pair of five-point games by
Amelia Novitch (Dover, Mass.) and
Kathryn Blake (Medfield, Mass.); with Novich scoring two and assisting on three and Blake racking up five goals.
Clare Connolly (Hanover, Mass.) led the game with 10 draw controls.
Maici Mintchwarner (Cream Ridge, N.J.) made 11 saves while
Kathleen Murphy (Scarborough, Maine) made four.
Coast Guard women's lacrosse will look to bounce back on March 19th, playing the visitor role in non-conference action against Bridgewater State (6-1)
