NEW LONDON, Conn. —
Oliver Perry (East Greenwich, R.I.) of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy men's soccer team and
Sam Halvorson (Chesapeake, Va.) of the women's swimming & diving team have been named the CoastGuardAthletics.com Athletes of the Week, presented by First Command, for the week ending on November 9th.
After men's soccer played to a 1-1 draw against Springfield in their New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opening round game through regulation and two overtime halves last Tuesday, the game went into a penalty kick shootout to decide who would be moving on to the semifinals. The shootout was tied, 3-3, when Perry walked up to the spot with the opportunity to end the game, and he took advantage by burying his shot in the bottom left corner of the net. The sophomore's big moment was just the third appearance of his career.
Halvorson continued her strong start to the season by notching two individual wins and playing a part in both relay wins for the Bears at Springfield College's tri-meet with Wheaton College. Halvorson won both backstroke events at the meet, taking the 100 with a time of 59.45 and the 200 in 2:10.98, and helped the 400-yard medley relay team kick off the festivities with a 4:06.68 win and the 400 free relay team to a 3:43.74 victory.
Halvorson and the women's swim & dive team will be in action again on Friday at Wellesley College.
