NEW LONDON, Conn. —
United States Coast Guard Academy women's soccer senior
Emma Acker (Springfield, Va.) and football sophomore
Freddy Barber (Goochland, Va.) have been named the CoastGuardAthletics.com Cadet-Athletes of the Week, presented by First Command, for their athletics performances during the week ending on Sunday, September 6th.
Acker, a goalkeeper, helped Coast Guard women's soccer go without a defeat in their first week of action with her play during Saturday's 0-0 draw at Alvernia University. The senior posted her first career shutout while recording a career-high seven saves. The result moved the Bears to 1-0-1, the team's first start without a loss through two games since 2022.
Barber, a wide receiver and return specialist, had a banner day in the football team's season opener against the University of New England on Saturday. In his first career start at receiver, he totaled 166 receiving yards and scored a touchdown on 13 receptions. Barber also threw for a touchdown and a two-point conversion on a pair of designed plays, while his receiving touchdown was a 64-yard play late in the fourth quarter that put the Bears out of reach for the Nor'easters.
Following yesterday's loss at Albertus Magnus College, Acker and Bears women's soccer will look to bounce back this Friday, September 11th, when they host their all-time rivals from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy for a 7:00 PM kick-off. Meanwhile, Barber and Coast Guard football will hit the road this upcoming Saturday, the 12th, to play Curry College at noon.
