Pottle Delivers Slump-Busting Goal at Mount Holyoke

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. —

The U.S. Coast Guard Academy women's soccer team snapped a six-game losing streak on Wednesday by defeating New England Men's and Women's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) rivals Mount Holyoke College, 1-0. The game was headed for a tie before Ella Pottle (Epping, N.H.) intervened in the 88th minute.

Coast Guard improves to 2-10-2 on the season and 1-5 in conference play, while Mount Holyoke moves to 1-7-3 overall and 0-6 in the NEWMAC. The Lyons will face another NEWMAC foe this upcoming Saturday when they make a trip over to Boston for a 1 p.m. game against Emerson College.

The Bears took 31 shots, with ten on goal, before Pottle proved persistence pays off with her team's 32nd try of the night. The play was set up by Bianca McIntosh (Woodbridge, Va.), who won a Lyons goal kick and immediately broke free with the ball up the left sideline. The freshman wingback made it to the front left corner of the box and sent it on the ground to the incoming Pottle, who caught Mount Holyoke's keeper off her stance before sending it in. The goal made it back-to-back games with a score for Pottle, who found the back of the net against Emerson College this past Saturday.

McIntosh led the Bears with seven shot attempts, trailed by a pair of sixes from senior captain Mia Forti (Madison, Conn.) and fellow freshman Ellie Millner (Woodbridge, Va.). McIntosh has now played a part in each of the Bears' last three goals on the season, helping on Pottle's in the Emerson game and giving a feed to Forti in Coast Guard's lone goal at Springfield College a week prior.

Helping the Bears on the chances all night were their luck in setting up corner kick opportunities, a stat they dwarfed their hosts in by a 17-1 margin. Mount Holyoke took 13 shots all game, with three being on target, and were whistled for seven fouls to Coast Guard's nine. Taryn White led the Lyons in shot attempts, with four. Julia Little (Pensacola, Fla.) saved three shots in her 14th game of the year, while her counterpart had a rock-solid nine before letting up the decider.

Bears women's soccer has a chance to better their conference standing again this Saturday in a 1 p.m. game at Clark University (5-4-4, 1-3-2). Coast Guard were the victors of last year's match-up in New London with a 1-0 result.
