WORCESTER, Mass. —
The U.S. Coast Guard Academy women's soccer team scored twice and was able to stop a late comeback from hosts Clark University (Mass.) in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Saturday. Senior captain
Teal Wasson (Kahuku, Hawai'i) netted the first, and
Bianca McIntosh (Woodbridge, Va.) fed one to
Ella Pottle (Epping, N.H.) for the second, the duos second game in a row teaming up on a score.
Coast Guard improves to 3-10-2 on the season and 2-5 in the NEWMAC, while Clark moves to 5-5-4 overall and 1-4-2 in conference play. The Cougars will get another chance to improve their position on the league table when they play at Mount Holyoke College (1-8-3, 0-7) this upcoming Wednesday.
The teams were knotted in a scoreless draw for the first 53 minutes before Wasson broke the tie after taking a feed from
Ellie Millner (Woodbridge, Va.). The senior faked a step to her right to create an opening on her left, and fired a shot through the wickets of the Cougars' goalkeeper.
Coast Guard doubled their lead just two minutes later, when a McIntosh dump pass at the front edge of the box was immediately chanced upon by Pottle. The curving shot went into the top left bin to make it three straight games with a goal for the sophomore and four in a row with an assist for the freshman.
Clark got one back in the 78th after
Ainsley Golini put one in while
Julia Little (Pensacola, Fla.) was recovering from a preceding try. Despite the deficit being cut in half, the Cougars were unable to rally their troops for even one more shot while facing a clinching Bears defense over the final 12 minutes.
An even game saw the hosts lead in shots, 15-14, but Coast Guard finished with a 9-7 shots on goal advantage. Clark also had more chances on corners, winning seven to just four for the Bears. Coast Guard was whistled for seven fouls, while Clark was reprimanded just four times; the Bears were also flashed the lone yellow card of the match.
Pottle led her side in shot attempts, with three, while McIntosh and Millner shared the team-high in shots on target at two each.
Calabria Augustino and
Georgia Lewis both led the Cougars with four tries, and Lewis led the squad with two on target while getting the assist on Golini's goal. Little picked up the win in net with five saves, while counterpart
Ava Lepro amassed seven.
Bears women's soccer returns to action this upcoming Wednesday, hosting Salve Regina University (4-8-2, 2-4-1) in a 7 p.m. contest. The last two meetings between the Bears and the Seahawks have ended in 2-2 draws. Wasson and
Lulu Vlases (Bozeman, Mont.) recorded each Coast Guard's goals in the most recent game.
