BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Coast Guard women's soccer suited up on Sunday afternoon for the second of two games in Pennsylvania this weekend. The Bears looked to put Saturday's 3-1 loss to DeSales behind them and earn their first victory of the season as they faced Moravian University, but the Greyhounds came out on top after scoring the only goal in the match halfway through the second half.
Coast Guard falls to 0-3 in 2024, while Moravian remains undefeated at 4-0. The Greyhounds get nearly a full week's worth of rest and practice before their next game against Misericordia University, which takes place on Saturday, September 14th at 7 PM.
Moravian took the first shot of the game in the 8th minute, but it went wide right. The Bears' first attempt of the match came in the 15th minute from junior forward
Mia Forti (Madison, Conn.), but the Greyhounds' goalkeeper saved it. Coast Guard took four shots in total during the first 45 minutes; three of them were saved while one went wide left.
The Bears faced a locked in Moravian defense to open the second half, as the hosts didn't allow a shot until the 67th minute when an attempt by senior forward
Riley Vicinanzo (Vestavia Hills, Ala.) was saved. The match seemed to be headed towards a draw until the Greyhounds broke through with a goal in the 78th minute.
Coast Guard shifted their focus to equalizing before the final buzzer. Senior midfielder
Sydney Park's (Severna Park, Md.) attempt in the 85th minute missed left; junior midfielder
Tara Jessen (Signal Mountain, Tenn.) tried one with less than 30 seconds to go in the match but was unsuccessful; and Vicinanzo tried once more with 8 seconds to go, but her shot missed high.
Senior goalkeeper Emily Scharnitzy (Charleston, S.C.) played the full 90 minutes and made 2 saves in the losing effort. The Bears took 9 shot in total during the match and were whistled for 6 fouls but were administered no cards.
Women's soccer are away for their next game but won't have to go too far as they head down the street to play Connecticut College on Wednesday. The Mohegan Parkway match-up is slated for a 4 PM kick off, and the Camels sit at 1-1 this season after losing 2-0 to #9 Amherst College.
