Women's Soccer Defeated 4-1 by Connecticut College

NEW LONDON, Conn. - Coast Guard women's soccer, in search of their first win of the season, took a trip down the Mohegan Parkway to face nearby rivals Connecticut College. The Camels came out on top in this one by a score of 4-1, meaning the Bears will have to wait a little bit longer to get in the win column.

Connecticut College went into the game with a 1-1 record, having lost their previous game this past Saturday afternoon to NESCAC rivals #9 Amherst College. The Camels face another NESCAC rival this upcoming Saturday at home in the form of Bowdoin College, with kick-off slated for 11:00 AM.

The game remained tied until the 12th minute, when Connecticut College put one into the high center area of the net to go up 1-0. The Camels extended added another ten minutes later in the 22nd minute with a goal in the lower left corner, and then opened up the game even more not long after by taking a 3-0 lead in the 23rd minute.

Coast Guard would cut into the defecit in the 42nd minute. Junior midfielder Arwen Wise (Weatherford, Tex.) played a nice pass to first-year midfielder Ella Pottle (Epping, N.H.), who tapped it into the lower right corner of the goal to make it a 3-1 ball game.

Neither team found the net until well into the second half, when Connecticut College re-extended the lead to 4-1 with a goal to the lower left corner. The Bears would attempt to muster a comeback but were unable to score by the final buzzer.

Pottle's goal was the first of her collegiate career, and the same could be said for Wise and her assist. Senior Emily Scharnitzy (Charleston, S.C.) made her fourth start at goalie in as many games this season and made 8 saves while facing 20 shots from the Camels attackers. Both teams combined for 17 fouls, but no cards were awarded.

Women's soccer get a few days rest before visiting Eastern Connecticut State on Saturday afternoon. The Warriors are off to a 1-3 start this season, with their most recent result being a 1-0 loss to Worcester State. The game is set to begin at 1:00 PM.
