Scherer walks it off in 12 for Bears

NEW LONDON, Conn. - With Charlie Red on 2nd base and one out in the 12th inning, coach Casey opted to use pinch hitter Tate Scherer. The sophomore from local Mystic, CT delivered with an RBI base hit up the middle to give the Bears a 7-6 victory. Charlie Red led off the inning with an opposite field single and fellow senior John Carroll moved him into scoring position with a textbook sacrifice bunt. Scherer took care of the rest.

The loss for Springfield drops them to 14-17 (1-10 NEWMAC). They will next face WPI this Saturday in a double header at Archie Allen Field in Springfield.

Freshman pitcher Ryan Karman earned the victory on the mound, moving to 3-0 on the year. Karman was able to maneuver his way out of numerous jams in his four innings pitched in relief. He escaped a man on 2nd with one out in the 10th and 1st and 3rd with one out in the 12th. In his four innings, he struck out six and allowed zero runs to drop his season ERA to 0.71. Sophomore RJ Priddy was excellent in relief as well, keeping CGA in the game with three innings pitched of one run ball. Jack Gausselin struck out the only batter he faced to escape a jam in the 5th.

At the plate, each team had over 10 hits and left 11 runners on base. Charlie Red led the way for the Bears, going 4/6. Wyatt Duthu, John Tacchini, Nate Stafford, and Kael Godshalk each had two hits with Red and Duthu adding two runs each. Drew Basque made the most of his day, getting a single on the first and only pitch he saw in his pinch hit appearance.

The Bears extra inning victory improves them to 19-8(9-2 NEWMAC). Their next game is at Nichols College tomorrow April 24th at 3:30 PM.
