DUDLEY, Mass. - In a slug fest on both sides, the Bears came out victorious by a score of 21-12. In the victory, freshman first baseman
Nathan Stafford wrote his name in the Coast Guard record book. His 3rd hit of the day and 55th of the season put him alone atop the single season hits leaderboard in CGA history. Stafford was also two shy of breaking the single season RBI record, he went on to shatter that with six on the day, giving him 42 on the year. With five games to go in the regular season, Stafford currently sits in 8th across all of Division III in batting average.
Joining Stafford in the books was Junior 2nd baseman
Wyatt Duthu. The Bears stellar leadoff hitter broke the single season record of runs scored by scoring his 40th of the season. The previous record of 39 was set by Tyler Babkiewich in 2011 and tied by Duthu's former teammate
Blake Carroll in 2023.Â
After trailing 7-4 going into the 5th, the Bears exploded in the top half of the 5th inning. They scored seven runs to take the lead and they would not give it back. They ultimately scored 21 runs with another seven run inning in the top of the 9th to give them insurance over the Bison.Â
Joining Stafford in the three hit club today were
John Tacchini,
John Carroll, and
Kael Godshalk. Godshalk also joined Stafford as the only Bears to homer in the game. Catcher
Drew Basque added two hits and
Charles Red walked three times and scored a run while also throwing the final inning for the Bears. Outfielder
Ryan Lista made the most of his opportunity, singling in his only at bat of the day. On the mound, Aidan Anderson earned his first victory of the season.Â
For Nichols, the loss drops them to 21-9. They will next travel to Clark tomorrow at 3:30 PM.Â
The Coast Guard victory improves them to 20-8, this is the first time the Bears have reached the 20 win mark since 2013. They will host a doubleheader vs NEWMAC rival Babson this Saturday April 27th, with first pitch of game 1 scheduled for 12 PM.
