BOSTON, Mass. - Coast Guard women's soccer was handed a conference loss at Emerson College on Saturday afternoon. The loss puts the Bears at 1-6-3 (1-1-1 NEWMAC) on the season.
Emerson took the lead in the 16th minute on a link-up between midfielders
Linae Bezdek and
Maddie Khaw. Khaw picked up an upfield pass and played it into the box, where Bezdek received and shot it to the left of a diving
Emily Scharnitzky.
Coast Guard's
Lulu Vlases took an equalizing attempt just a few minutes later on a free kick in the 20th minute, but her shot was stopped by
Amara Schaub. Neither team could find the back of the net for the remainder of the half, Coast Guard taking seven total tries at doing so and the Lions taking six.
The second half was scoreless for the first 15 minutes of play until the hosts extended their lead in the 61st minute. Bezdek took the upfield pass herself this time before dribbling towards the box and getting a low rolling shot past Scharnitzky. Emerson widened the gap to 3-0 just a few minutes later in the 63rd minute after a shot by Khaw went into the top right corner.
Scharnitzy finished the game with four saves; the only field players to spend the full 90 minutes on the pitch with the senior goalie were fellow seniors
Sydney Park and
Riley Vicinanzo. Both teams finished the game with the same number of shots on goal (7). Coast Guard would prove to have the more physical defensive strategy as the Bears were whistled 16 times to the Lions' 10 infractions.
Women's soccer looks to bounce back against Springfield College on Wednesday, Oct. 9th. The Pride are 4-1-3 (1-0-1 NEWMAC) this season and have been historically dominant against Coast Guard, winning 23 of their 25 matches vs. the Bears dating back to 2000. The two teams' last game ended in a 2-0 win for Springfield.
