NEW LONDON, Conn. –
In a NEWMAC battle, the Bears fell 1-3 to the Springfield Pride, dropping their record to 1-7-3(1-2-1 NEWMAC). Springfield improves to 5-1-4(2-0-2 NEWMAC). The Pride will next face the #6 nationally ranked MIT Engineers at home on Saturday October 12 at 4:00 PM.
Springfield did not waste any time, jumping ahead early. Just 3:27 into the game, the Pride's Meredith Healy(Niantic, CT) found the back of the net on an assist from Jen Walker(Webster, MA). For the majority of the half, it appeared that goal would be the only one of the half but with just 16 seconds remaining in the 1st half, the Pride delivered a crushing blow. With time ticking down, graduate student Olivia Raucci(Schenectady, NY) scored to give Springfield the 2-0 lead heading to half. The Pride led despite being outshot by the Bears 6-4.
Mia Forti(Madison, CT) and
Ella Pottle(Epping, NH) each had numerous opportunities that nearly found the goal.
In the 2nd, Coast Guard came out hot. Annabelle Pezzullo(Ashaway, RI) put a shot on goal just 30 seconds into the half. Five minutes later, Pezzullo brought the Bears back into the game. After a Springfield foul, the sophomore took a free kick from well beyond the box and sent a perfectly struck ball into the back of the net to cut the Pride lead in half.
The Bears however, were unable to parlay the goal into a momentum swing. Less than a minute after the CGA goal, Springfield delivered the dagger. First year forward Molly Baxter(Pleasantville, NY) scored to again put the Pride up two scores and put to bed any Bears momentum.
The 3-1 score would hold for the remainder of the evening with CGA's best opportunity to get back into the game coming on a penalty kick with just under three minutes remaining that they failed to convert.
The Bears will next travel to Wellesley on Saturday October 12 for a 2:00 PM match vs the Blue
