NEW LONDON, Conn. - On a night that saw our six graduating seniors recognized in front of a raucous Billard Gymnasium, Coast Guard won eight of ten varsity bouts and all five exhibition bouts against Northeast Region foe, WPI. Seven of the eight Bears victories came via bonus points, allowing the #7 nationally ranked Coast Guard team to cruise past the Engineers.
After Joey Martin received a forfeit at 133lbs, Coast Guard had to fight hard to win technical fall victories at five separate weights. Sophomore Owen Woolcott earned the first of the evening, combining three takedowns with a flurry of bonus points to rack up the 18-3 win. Seven of those points came at a critical point at the end of the second period, with only 8 seconds remaining.
Two quick takedowns helped sophomore #9 Nate Fitt open up a lead before securing a first-period fall at 149lbs. Senior #10 Noah Caskey added a decision victory at 157lbs, before senior Co-Captains Steven Rochard and Joe Chapman each notched emphasized fifteen-point spread wins over their opponents.
To close the show, Coast Guard's dynamic duo of #2 Coy Spooner and #2 Carl DiGiorgio each dominated their ways to 22-6 technical fall victories each.
Also impressing were the Coast Guard exhibition wrestlers. First-years Robert Rerras and Tye Barker; sophomores Jacob Woodburn and Thomas Rhodes; and junior Gus Edwards all emerged victorious on the night - again, all winning via bonus point criteria.
It is a quick turnaround for the Bears as they head north on Saturday morning for two more in-region duals against New England College and Norwich University, hosted at NEC and beginning at 12pm EST.
