PROVIDENCE, RI - The Coast Guard Wrestling team went 3-1 on Sunday afternoon in dual meet action to advance to their fifth consecutive New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Conference Dual Meet Championships. With their performance on Sunday, the Bears advance to 9-2 on the season.
The Bears started their day by defeating New England College for the second time in as many weeks, this time by a final score of 39-8. In the Quarterfinal Round, the third-seeded Bears upended the sixth-seeded Hawks from Roger Williams University by a final score of 51-0.
The Semi-Final Round was a match-up for the ages. Coast Guard met Castleton University, the #7 ranked team nationally. The dual saw the two teams split the first four matches two-apiece. Castleton then pulled ahead, winning consecutive matches at 157lbs and 165lbs before Joe Chapman got Coast Guard back on track with a win at 174lbs. Castleton then took the next bout, setting up a scenario where the Bears needed to win each of the final two bouts to win the dual. Coy Spooner delivered a 6-0 win at 197lbs, setting the stage for what ended up being the marquee match of the entire event. A chess match between two game opponents came down to overtime after a 1-1 regulation knot. The nationally ranked #2 heavyweight, Carl DiGiorgio, secured an overtime takedown in sudden victory, and the 18-16 team victory which propelled Coast Guard to the Conference Championship match against Johnson & Wales.
