Box Score NEW LONDON, Conn. - Bears Women's Lacrosse hosted Smith in the New England Women's and Men's Conference (NEWMAC) Quarterfinals, defeating the Pioneers with a final score of 13-5.
The Bears shutout the Pioneers for the first quarter of the game. On offense, CGA put up the first goal of the game with four minutes left in the first 15. Gianna Cascio was credited with the score, giving Coast Guard a 1-0 lead.
The second quarter started off quickly with a goal by Cascio in the first 42 seconds. Caitlyn Coates followed it up about 30 seconds later, to give the Bears a 3-0 lead.
With less than 10 minutes to go, Abby McAllister put CGA up, 4-0.
Smith got its first goal of the game with six and a half to go in the first half. The Bears added two more and the Pioneers added one. Heading into halftime, CGA was leading, 6-2.
Coming out of the break Smith got the first two goals of the third. But Coast Guard still outscored the Pioneers, 4-3. Brenda Anderson, Sarah Skurat and Addy Bass. CGA was up, 10-5, heading into the final 15.
The entirety of the fourth quarter was a goalie battle as both teams got shots off but couldn't find the back of the net.
The first goal of the fourth was scored with just over three minutes left in the game by Skurat. A minute and a half later, Coates added to the lead. The final goal of the game was scored by Cascio with less than 10 seconds remaining.
Cascio led all scorers with four goals and Maici Mintchwarner recorded five saves for CGA.
The Bears survive and advance to the semifinals to face MIT on May 2nd.
