Box Score NORTON, Mass. -- A career-high 23 points from sophomore Glory Blethen helped Coast Guard Women's Basketball win on the road over New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opponent Wheaton College on Wednesday evening, 79-50. With the win, the Bears improve to 12-10 (4-3 NEWMAC); the Lyons fall to 12-11 (2-6 NEWMAC).
Blethen posted a double-double with 23 points and 12 rebounds to lead Coast Guard. Blethen recorded her third double-double of the season and added two steals, a pair of blocks, and an assist. Sophomore Julia Mann posted an outstanding shooting effort with just one miss on the night, going 5-6 from the floor, including a perfect 2-2 from three-point range, and converted all seven free throw attempts to give her 19 points in addition to nine rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Kelly Hagerty added 10 points, three rebounds, and an assist coming off the bench. Freshman Dorothy Stotts chipped in nine points and five rebounds, and senior Jacqueline Ward added eight points and dished out three assists. Freshman Taylor Lynch added five points and led the Bears with four steals.
Wheaton grabbed an early 6-2 lead through the first three and a half minutes of play, but the Bears ripped off 14 straight points to take a 16-6 advantage with 54 seconds left in the opening quarter. Coast Guard put together a 20-6 run to close out the second quarter, behind eight points from Mann and seven from Ward to take a 38-19 lead into the half. The Bears stayed hot in the second half, securing the win, 79-50.
The Bears outshot the Lyons, posting 47% from the floor, 41.2% from beyond the arc, and 90.9% from the free throw line. The Bears also outrebounded the Lyons, 41-31, and were able to force Wheaton into 21 turnovers.
The Bears are back in action at home on Saturday, February 11 at 3 PM as they host WPI in continued NEWMAC play.
