Box Score MIDDLETOWN, Conn.-- Wesleyan handed Coast Guard volleyball its first loss of the season on the road, 3-0. The Bears had won five straight, the best start for the program since 2009, but the Cardinals took three sets (25-14, 25-17, 25-12) to snap the Bears' win streak. Coast Guard drops to 5-1 on the season, and Wesleyan starts the season 1-0.
Sophia Lindus led the Cardinals with nine kills and six digs. Jenna Otaola had a game-high 10 digs, and Grace Dennis had a game-high 14 assists.
Senior Claire Portigue led the Bears with nine kills. Noelle Tursky had a team-high 11 assists and six digs. Junior Carmen Zipf added six digs.
In the first set, Wesleyan took a quick 5-0 lead. Shannon Shaw had an ace that brought the Bears within two, 11-9, but the Cardinals answered to take the first set 25-14.
A block assist from Portigue and Elizabeth Atkinson tied the second set at 12-12 but Wesleyan took the lead and extended to take the second set, 25-17.
Early in the third set, the Bears had a 3-0 lead, but the Cardinals went on a 9-0 run to take a 9-3 lead and never looked back, sweeping the Bears in three.
The Bears are back in action on Saturday, September 10, at home against Western Connecticut at 12:30 PM and Elms at 3 PM.
