Box Score New London, Connecticut - It did not take long for Coast Guard Women's Soccer to jump out to an early 1-0 lead in their New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) season opener.
Junior Karagan Burger found the back of the net for Coast Guard just 08:17 into the game - Bulger's third of the season. She was assisted by Junior Chase Merrick. That goal proved to be enough as Coast Guard cruised to a 1-0 victory over Wellesley College.
Seniors Anna Carleton and Kelly Wade, along with Merrick also tallied shots for the Bears, but it was Bulger's lone strike that separated Coast Guard for good.
Goalkeeper Emily Scharnitzky once again put up a dominated performance between the frames! She held a perfect save percentage this afternoon, stopping all ten shots on net from the Blue, who were active today in their offensive side of the field. The Bears defense remained stout throughout and re-directed eight other shot attempts to aid Scharnitzky's impressive young season.
Head Coach Susan Grant had this to say about her team's performance today:
"It was a solid performance by the team to pick up our first NEWMAC win of the season. A total team effort! [Goalkeeper] Emily was clutch is securing a shutout from a dangerous Wellesley attack."
With the win, Coast Guard improves to 1-0-0 in the NEWMAC and 4-2-0 on the season. Wellesley falls to 3-2-0 and 0-1-0 in conference play.
The Bears will be home next Saturday, September 24th for another NEWMAC showdown against Babson College at 12pm EST.
