Box Score DANBURY, Conn.-- Senior Katherine Pittman scored the game-winning goal in overtime to lift Coast Guard women's lacrosse to an 9-8 victory over Western Connecticut on the road on Wednesday evening. The Bears have won six in a row for the first time in program history, improving to 7-3 on the season. Western Connecticut dropped to 7-3 overall with the loss.
With one second left in regulation, Gianna Cascio scored a free-position, man-up goal to tie the game 8-8 and force overtime. Western Connecticut won the opening draw of the overtime and took a shot to try and win it. Sophomore goalkeeper Devon McCue came up huge with a big save for the Bears. Coast Guard got the ball down the field and Pittman took it in to score the game-winner 2:13 into overtime.
Pittman led the Bears with five points, coming from four goals and one assist. Cascio added three goals and Kira Howard and Addy Bass each added one goal apiece.
Dominique DeMarsico led Western Connecticut with four goals and two assists. Alexa Riggio scored twice, and Brianna Pota and Mia Schumey each added one.
The Bears took a 4-3 lead in the opening quarter with a goal from Cascio and Howard and two from Pittman, including a buzzer-beater for the lead.
Western Connecticut scored twice in the second quarter, and Pittman put away her third goal as the teams were tied 5-5 at the half.
Riggio scored a man-up goal for Western Connecticut in the third quarter at 10:21, but Pittman and Cascio connected for Cascio's second goal of the game, to tie it up 6-6.
Bass opened the fourth quarter with a goal at 14:06 for a 7-6 Coast Guard lead. Western Connecticut would score back-to-back goals from DeMarsico to tie and then take the lead, 8-7. Cascio got fouled and scored a free-position goal to send the game to overtime with one second remaining.
McCue made nine saves for the Bears in the win, while Anna Schipf made 13 saves in the cage for Western Connecticut.
Coast Guard had a 13-5 advantage in draw controls and outshot Western Connecticut 26-24.
The Bears are back in action on the road on Saturday, April 9 at Wheaton at 1 PM.
