Box Score NEW LONDON, Conn.-- Nicholas Fulgione had seven points to lead Emerson to a 14-13 victory over Coast Guard men's lacrosse on Saturday afternoon in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) regular-season finale. The Bears end the regular season at 9-7 overall and 4-2 in NEWMAC play. Emerson improves to 12-5 overall and 2-4 in conference play.
Coast Guard finished as the number two seed and will host third-seeded Springfield on Wednesday, May 4.
Fulgione led Emerson with seven points from two goals and five assists. Skyler Celotto and Hunter Gervais each scored five goals for Emerson, and Josh DeMattos, and Birk Swan both added a goal in the win.
Caleb Holdridge had seven points from three goals and four assists to lead Coast Guard. Taylor Gustafson had five points from three goals and two assists, and Gaige Kruger and Nate Gee both added a pair for the Bears. Ian Feely, Matt Lubin, and Ryan Flynn all scored a goal each in the loss.
The Bears had a 4-1 lead in the first period, including three straight goals from Gustafson.
Emerson scored five-straight goals to take a 6-4 lead. Lubin scored his lone goal of the game at 4:04 in the second as the Bears trailed 6-5 at the half.
Kruger and Holdridge scored back-to-back goals to take the lead back, 7-6 with 8:58 in the third. Celotto answered with two more for Emerson to take an 8-7 lead with 4:46 left in the third quarter. Holdridge tied the game 8-8 with 3:33 in the third and sparked a three-goal run, taking a 10-8 lead. DeMattos scored a buzzer-beater from the Emerson defensive end to cut the Lions' deficit, 10-9 heading into the fourth period.
The Lions outscored Coast Guard 5-3 in the final quarter to take the 14-13 final.
Dan Lucas made seven saves in goal for the Bears. While Malcolm McGrath made 16 saves for Emerson in the win.
Emerson won 16 of 30 faceoffs, but Coast Guard outshot the Lions 43-39.
