Babson Holds On For Win Over Bears

NEW LONDON, Conn.-- Babson had eight different goal scorers to take down Coast Guard women's lacrosse 13-10 in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Saturday afternoon. The Bears dropped to 10-5 on the season and 6-2 in the NEWMAC. Babson improved to 11-5 overall and 7-1 in the conference.

Before the game, the Bears honored their four seniors, Katherine DeHart, Katherine Pittman, Maddie Rizzuto, and Jordan Russell, during a senior day ceremony for their contributions to the women's lacrosse program.

Amelia Novitch, Genevieve Bushey, Claudia Dodge, Anna Katherine Sypniewski, and Erin Jayne each scored two goals for the Beavers. Courtney Kaskey, Jessica Evans, and Clare Connolly all added one goal apiece in the win for Babson.

Pittman and freshman Caitlyn Coates combined for six points from three goals each to lead the Bears. Addy Bass, Brenda Anderson, and Gianna Cascio all chipped in with a goal for Coast Guard.

Pittman scored her first of the game to put the Bears on the board first at 14:20. Novitch answered with Babson's first goal at 12:12. Pittman and Coates scored back-to-back goals to give Coast Guard a 3-1 lead. Jayne scored at 8:08 cutting the Babson deficit to 3-2. Cascio put one away at 6:17, giving the Bears a 4-2 advantage. Bushey closed out the quarter with a goal at 2:35 as the Beavers trailed 4-3 at the end of the first.

Babson scored the opening three goals of the second quarter to take a 6-4 lead. Anderson scored the Bears' first goal of the second quarter to make it 6-5, but Dodge answered with one for Babson with 13 seconds remaining in the half as the Beavers took a 7-5 lead.

Weber scored her first of the game at 11:40 in the third, sparking a three-goal run as the Bears took an 8-7 lead. Sypniewski tied it for Babson at 8:39 as the Beavers scored the final four goals of the third quarter for an 11-8 lead.

Babson scored the opening two goals of the fourth quarter, giving the Beavers a 13-8 lead. Pittman and Coates scored back-to-back with two man-up goals in the final eight minutes of play, but Babson held on for the 13-10 final.

Sophomore goalkeeper Devon McCue made 10 saves in the cage for the Bears. Freshman Kathleen Murphy made six saves for Babson.

Coast Guard held a 16-11 advantage in draw controls, but Babson outshot the Bears 32-18.

The Bears are back in action on Wednesday, April 27 at 7 PM in the NEWMAC regular-season finale as Coast Guard hosts Springfield.
