Box Score NEW LONDON, Conn.-- Shannon Schmidt scored four goals to lead Coast Guard women's lacrosse to a 17-5 victory over Wellesley in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Saturday afternoon. The Bears improved to 6-3 on the season and 3-0 in NEWMAC play. The Blue dropped to 2-6 overall and 0-3 in conference action.
Schmidt had a game-high four goals and added an assist. Laine Weber tallied three goals and one assist, and Brenda Anderson added two goals and two assists. Sarah Skurat and Caitlyn Coates each added two goals. Jordan Russell had one goal and a game-high three assists. Addy Bass, Madison Seguin, and Katharine Rott rounded out scoring for Coast Guard with a goal each.
Schmidt opened the game with two quick goals for the Bears to start a six-goal run, ending the first quarter with a 6-0 advantage.
Wellesley scored the opening two goals of the second quarter, cutting the deficit to 6-2. Coast Guard answered with four more, including two from Anderson, one from Coates, and a man-down goal from Schmidt. Mallet scored a man-up goal for Wellesley at 1:05 to cut the deficit to 10-3.
Coast Guard scored three straight to open the third quarter, taking a 13-3 lead. Mallett scored another man-up goal for the Blue but Russell scored with 44 seconds remaining in the third for a 14-4 Coast Guard lead.
Weber, Rott, and Seguin scored three more for the Bears as they took a 17-4 advantage. Sugg scored the final goal of the game for Wellesley to make the final, 17-5.
Devon McCue made two saves in the first half for the Bears and Maici Mintchwarner made three saves in the second half of play.
Wellesley had a 15-11 advantage in draw controls, but Coast Guard had a 34-13 advantage in shots.
The Bears are back in action on the road on Tuesday, April 6 at Western Connecticut at 5 PM.
