Box Score CAMBRIDGE, Mass.-- Ryan Gebhardt had eight points to lead MIT to a 17-10 victory over Coast Guard men's lacrosse on Saturday afternoon in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action. The Bears dropped to 8-5 overall and 3-1 in conference play. The Engineers remain undefeated at 12-0 overall and 4-0 in conference play.
Gebhardt recorded four goals and four assists for an eight-point game for the Engineers. Gavin Vandenberg scored five goals and added two assists, and Heath Nilsen scored four times with two assists for MIT. Bennett Stankovits and Andy Shin both added a pair of goals in the win for the Engineers.
Caleb Holdridge had a six-point game for Coast Guard, all coming from assists, and Taylor Gustafson scored a team-high four goals. Ian Feely, Ryan Hunter, Ryan Flynn, Matt Flynn, Dan Zarillo, and Gunnar Brodfuehrer each tallied a goal in the loss for Coast Guard.
MIT scored the first three goals of the game before Brodfuehrer got the Bears on the board at 6:22. The Engineers scored three more times to take a 6-1 lead in the first period.
Gustafson scored his first of the game at 13:35 in the second, but MIT answered with three straight goals, extending its lead to 9-2. Feely and Gustafson scored back-to-back goals to cut the Bears' deficit, to 9-4. The Engineers scored two more to close out the second period with an 11-4 lead.
Zarillo and Gustafson scored in the third, but MIT scored four more to take a 15-6 lead. The Engineers scored first in the fourth period, but the Bears scored three in a row to cut the deficit 16-9. Both teams scored one more goal each for the 17-10 final.
Coast Guard junior goalkeeper Dan Lucas made 15 saves for the Bears, while Lukas Drexler-Bruce made five saves for MIT.
The Engineers won 20 of 29 faceoffs.
Coast Guard is back in action on Tuesday, April 19, at cross-town rival Connecticut College at 7 PM.
