Box Score SPARKS, Md.-- Gaige Kruger scored four goals to lead Coast Guard to a 21-11 victory over Grove City on Saturday afternoon at the US Lacrosse Complex in Maryland. The Bears improve to 2-2 on the season while the Wolverines drop to 2-3.
Kruger had a game-high four goals while Matt Lubin and Taylor Gustafson chipped in with three goals apiece and an assist for both. Nate Gee added two goals and three assists, and Caleb Holdridge tallied two goals and four assists. Ian Feely and Dan Zarillo both scored twice for the Bears, and Matt Flynn, Gunnar Brodfuehrer, and John Stone rounded out scoring for Coast Guard with a goal each. Logan Tobias had a team-high 10 ground balls and caused two turnovers.
Brett Gladstone and Matt Blythe each had three goals to lead Grove City. Zachary Hougan scored twice and Grant Evans, Jed Speers, and Griffen Agawa all scored a goal each for the Wolverines. Evens had a game-high 11 ground balls.
The Bears scored the opening six goals of the game, taking an early 6-0 lead. Grove City cut the deficit 6-2 to close out the first period.
Brodfuehrer opened the second period at 14:02 with his fourth goal of the season. The Wolverines answered with a four-goal run, trailing 7-6 with nine minutes left in the period. The Bears then went on a four-goal run of their own, extending their lead 11-6. Both teams traded goals in the final 30 seconds of the period, but Coast Guard held a 12-7 lead at the half.
Blythe scored the opening goal of the half for Grove City, but Coast Guard put away two more of their own, taking a 14-8 lead in the third period.
The Bears really put the game away in the fourth, outscoring the Wolverines 7-3 en route to the 21-11 final.
Dan Lucas made 10 saves in goal for the Bears in the victory, while Danny Stone made 10 saves for Grove City.
Coast Guard outshot Grove City 50-34.
The Bears are back in action on Wednesday, March 16 at 6 PM at home against NY Maritime.
