Bass and Coates Lead Bears to Victory Over Merchant Marine

NEW LONDON, Conn.-- Sophomore Addy Bass scored a career-high six goals to lead Coast Guard women's lacrosse to a 13-7 victory over rival Merchant Marine on Wednesday night. The Bears improved to 5-3, winning its fourth game in a row. Merchant Marine dropped to 3-2 overall.

Bass led the Bears with six goals, and freshman Caitlyn Coates tallied a season-high six points coming from three goals and three assists. Gianna Cascio added two goals and one assist, and Katherine Pittman and Sarah Skurat each recorded a goal and an assist. Kira Howard was dominant on the circle as she had a game-high seven draw controls.

Jessie Wohner led the Mariners with four goals and two assists. Julia Coughlin chipped in with two goals and one assist, and Kaitlyn Latchaw also scored in the loss for Merchant Marine.

Coast Guard shut out Merchant Marine in the opening quarter, taking a 3-0 lead with goals from Cascio, Coates, and Bass.

Bass and Coates scored the opening two goals of the second quarter, extending the Bears' lead to 5-0. Merchant Marine answered with two back-to-back goals to cut the deficit to 5-2. Bass scored her third of the game with 2:39 remaining in the second, and Coughlin scored one more for the Mariners to end the half with the Bears leading 6-3.

Bass scored again to open the third quarter, giving Coast Guard a 7-3 advantage. Merchant Marine started to chip away, scoring three straight goals in the third, bringing the Mariners within one, 7-6. Skurat and Bass each scored in the final five minutes of the quarter to give the Bears a 9-6 lead heading into the fourth.

The Bears went on a three-goal run with goals from Pittman, Bass, and Coates to give Coast Guard a 12-6 lead. Merchant Marine put one more away, but Cascio scored the final goal of the game, giving the Bears the 13-7 final score.

Sophomore goalkeeper Devon McCue made 10 saves for the Bears in the win. Hope Germanakos also made 10 saves for Merchant Marine in the loss.

Both teams were even on the draw circle with 12 apiece, and the Bears outshot the Mariners 30-20.

The Bears are back home again on Saturday, April 2 as they host Wellesley at noon.
