Box Score NEW LONDON, Conn. – Kira Wood led all scorers with a career-high tying 27 points leading Coast Guard to an 85-59 win over archrival Merchant Marine.
Coast Guard won its third straight to improve to 11-6 overall and snapped Merchant Marine's eight-game winning streak dropping the Mariners to 16-4 on the season.
The Bears have now won five straight in the series against Merchant Marine and Coast Guard earned another point towards the Superintendent's Trophy which the Bears now lead 8-2 this season.
Wood was 10 of 20 from the floor and hit five of 12 from 3-point range to lead the Bears. Kyra Hartman (17), Lily Mika (11) and Jacqueline Ward (11) also scored in double figures in the win for Coast Guard. Hartman had a team-high nine rebounds while Ward had a game-high seven assists.
Grace Jackson led Merchant Marine with 19 points while Julia Dahlke added 11 and Madison Reddick 10. Madison Demos had a game-high 14 rebounds for the Mariners.
Coast Guard shot 47.8 percent (32-67) from the floor and connected on nine of 26 from 3-point range while the Mariners were 20 of 65 from the floor (30.8 percent) and made just two of 16 from behind the arc.
The Bears would score the first seven points of the game and raced out to a 12-2 lead in the first four minutes of play. Coast Guard led 25-16 after the first quarter.
Coast Guard led by as many 14 at 30-16 in the second quarter and held a 42-31 lead at the half.
Merchant Marine cut the deficit to 44-38 with a 7-2 spurt to start the second half.
Coast Guard would use a 13-4 run to close out the third quarter as the lead ballooned to 68-50 after three quarters and cruised to the win.
The Bears are back in action on Saturday when they host Smith in a NEWMAC game at 3:00.
