KINGS POINT, N.Y. -- Coast Guard Women's Basketball lost on the road to Merchant Marine on Saturday, 73-70. Merchant Marine improves to 2-0; Coast Guard falls to 1-3.

The Bears were led by a record-breaking eight blocks from sophomore Glory Blethen. Freshman Dorothy Stotts scored 16 for the bears, including four 3-pointers. Blethen, Kira Wood, and Jacqueline Ward added nine points apiece. Julia Mann led the Bears with eight rebounds, followed by Ward and Stotts with seven each. Kaira Winston led the Mariners with a game-high 24 points; Lauren Hunter added 22 points and 21 rebounds.

Coast Guard held a 30-36 lead heading into the halftime break, but Merchant Marine used 8-0 run to open the third quarter and go up by two. Coast Guard answered with a basket to knot the score at 38-38 before the Mariners started another rally, using a 10-3 run to take a 48-41 lead. 

The Bears were down by nine, 65-56, with just 2:50 left in the fourth quarter before a pair of Stotts free throws and a Ward 3-pointer quickly cut the lead to four, 65-61. Kings Point twice pushed the lead back to five points before a Stotts 3-pointer brought the Bears back to within two, 69-67, with just 34 seconds to go. The Mariners made 3-of-4 free throws before another 3 from Stotts trimmed the lead down to two once again. Merchant Marine made 1 free throw with the Bears fouling to go up 73-70, and the Bears could not convert on a last-second three attempt.

The Bears are back in action on Monday, November 21 at 7 PM as they head to New Haven to take on Albertus Magnus.
