Second-Half Offensive Explosion Gives Bears Victory Over MIT

Box Score

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Senior running back Spencer McMillion and sophomore quarterback Joey Armentrout each rushed for two touchdowns in the second half for the Bears in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference action Saturday afternoon at MIT. The Bears (3-5, 1-3 NEWMAC) turned a 17-3 halftime deficit into a 31-24 victory at MIT (2-5, 0-4 NEWMAC).

On the day McMillion rushed 37 times for 208 yards. Armentrout pitched in with 33 rushing yards of his own and threw for 190 yards.

MIT jumped out to a 7-0 lead as Brady Klein scored on a 21-yard run with 3:38 remaining in the first quarter. The Bears answered with a Finnegan Hall 27-yard field goal to make it 7-3. MIT then came up big on special teams, as Brady Sullivan recovered a blocked punt in the end zone for a touchdown. Just before halftime, Nico Bulhof's 31-yard field goal pushed the MIT lead to 17-3.

On the opening drive of the second half, the Bears marched 73 yards on 12 plays with Armentrout scoring on a 1-yard run. That made the score 17-10 and with 27 seconds left in the third quarter McMillion ran it in from 49 yards out to tie the game at 17.

The Bears' defense stepped up with a three and out on the next MIT possession and Coast Guard took their first lead of the game 24-17 on Armentrout's 17-yard touchdown run. That score capped off a 9-play-70-yard drive. The Bears extended their lead to 31-17 with 3:21 remaining as McMillion ran it in from 16 yards out.

Following a 25-yard touchdown pass from Chase Harmon to Andrew Hutchinson, the Engineers' onside kick attempt went out of bounds. However, MIT got one more chance as the Bears couldn't pick up a first down and had to punt the ball away with 1:57 remaining in the contest. Starting at their own 20-yard line, MIT made it down to the Coast Guard 35, but Harmon's fourth-down throw with 17 seconds left was incomplete and Armentrout was able to kneel out the game and clinch the Bears' victory.

On the day the Bears racked up 430 yards of offense with MIT totaling 330 yards. On offense, freshman Broock Desta hauled in seven receptions for 64 yards and sophomore Jimmy Patz caught five passes for 58 yards. Junior Logan Morris led the Bears with nine tackles and also recorded his third interception of the year. Junior Ryan Vigo chipped in six tackles of his own and had three pass breakups. Senior Connor Healy also recorded an interception for the Bears.

Coast Guard returns home next Saturday, November 5, hosting WPI, while the Engineers hit the road to take on Springfield.
