Box Score NEW LONDON, Conn. – Amanda Dake hit .469 with a season-high 20 kills leading Coast Guard a to a 3-1 win over Smith in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game.
The Bears won 25-14, 25-22, 22-25, 25-16 to improve to 7-4 overall and 1-1 in the NEWMAC while Smith drops to 8-4 overall and 1-2 in the conference.
Maddie James hit .389 and finished with 10 kills and a match-high six blocks in the win. Kaela France had a match-high 16 digs for Coast Guard while Noelle Tursky led the way with a match-high 42 assists.
Olivia Smith led Smith with 10 kills while Abby Sweeney finished with eight kills. Katie Abbruzzese led the Pioneers with eight digs and Nathalie Pak had a team-high 17 assists.
Coast Guard would score nine straight behind the serving of Carmen Zipf to take a commanding 14-3 lead in the opening set. The Pioneers would use a 6-2 spurt to cut the deficit to 17-10. The Bears would however score three straight for a 20-10 lead and win the opener 25-14.
The Bears had a 10-6 lead in the second set and increased it to 16-11 and maintained that lead 20-16 before back-to-back points cut the lead to 20-18. The Bears led 23-21 and closed out the set 25-22.
Smith led for most of the third set before Coast Guard scored four straight to pull even at 17-17. The Pioneers scored six of the next eight for a 23-19 lead and closed it out 25-22.
The Bears took control of the match using a 6-1 run in the fourth set to open up a 15-9 lead and closed out the match with the 25-16 win.
Coast Guard is back in action on Thursday at Trinity at 7:00.
