Box Score NEW LONDON, Conn.-- Ryan Donovan and John Calicchio each scored three goals to lead Babson men's lacrosse to its first New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship with a 15-7 victory over Coast Guard on Saturday afternoon.
Babson remains undefeated at 5-0 and earns an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1979. The Bears, who made their third straight NEWMAC Championship game, end their season at 4-1.
Donovan and Calicchio combined for six goals to lead the Beavers. Sean Smith, Chi Chi Price, Lee Sipes each had two goals, and Alex Lesher, Reed Goldstein, Ethan Carpenter all added a goal apiece for Babson.
Sophomore Caleb Holdridge tallied a hat trick, senior Will Iorio had two goals and two assists, and sophomore Gaige Kruger put away two of his own for the Bears.
Holdridge opened the game with his first of the day at 12:49 but Sipes quickly answered for Babson to tie it 1-1 at 11:40. Peter Chisholm found Donovan at 4:52 as Babson took a 2-1 lead in the first quarter.
Babson opened the second quarter with two goals from Price and Goldstein to extend their lead 4-1. Iorio cut the deficit 4-2 with a goal at 12:30 but Babson answered with a four-goal run, taking an 8-2 lead. Holdridge scored his second of the game, from Iorio, on a man-up opportunity with 33 seconds left in the quarter, for an 8-3 score at the half.
Babson held Coast Guard to just one goal in the third quarter, coming from Kruger at 9:33, as the Beavers extended the lead, 13-4.
The Bears outscored Babson 3-2 in the final quarter of play but Babson finished with a 15-7 final to claim their first-ever NEWMAC Championship.
Coast Guard sophomore Dan Lucas made 14 saves in the cage while Mac Mowat had 12 saves in the victory for the Beavers.
Babson won 19 out of 25 faceoffs and outshot Coast Guard 51-40.
Babson will find out its opponent for the NCAA tournament during the selection show tomorrow night at 9 PM.
