Bears Offense Explodes on Senior Day

NEW LONDON, Conn.-- Sophomore Caleb Holdridge has five goals and three assists, leading Coast Guard men's lacrosse to a 21-9 victory over Emerson in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Saturday afternoon on senior day. The Bears finish the regular season with a perfect 3-0 record as Emerson drops to 0-2 on the year.

Holdridge tallied his second, eight-point performance of the season for the Bears. Senior Will Iorio and sophomore Gaige Kruger both added hat tricks in the victory, Iorio dishing out four assists as well. Sophomores Gunnar Brodfuehrer and Taylor Gustafson each scored a pair of goals. Senior Conor Rowan, junior Matt Flynn, sophomore Ryan Flynn, Michael Samson, and freshman Matt Lubin all added a goal each for Coast Guard.

Skyler Celotto led Emerson with four goals. Hunter Gervais, Nicholas Fulgione, Jack O'Rourke, Peirce Eldredge, and Austin Franklin were the remaining goal scorers for the Lions, with one apiece.

Celotto opened the game with a goal for the Lions at 13:09. Coast Guard exploded with an eight-goal run starting with Holdridge at 12:56 and ending with Rowan at 6:02 to take an 8-1 lead in the first. Emerson scored the last three goals of the quarter, two from man-up situations, to cut their deficit 8-4.

In a quiet second quarter, Iorio scored the opening goal at 13:13 with a 9-4 advantage. Celotto and Eldredge added two for the Lions during the second, bringing them within three (9-6) with 6:32 left in the half. Matt Flynn put away his only goal of the game with 3:26 remaining in the half for a 10-6 Coast Guard lead.

Emerson opened the half with a goal from Franklin to bring the Lions back within three (10-7) at 13:20. Brodfuehrer, Gustafson, and Holdridge each added a goal within the next three minutes of play to increase the Bears lead 13-7. Celotto would add his final goal for Emerson at 10:43 in the third cutting their deficit to 13-7. Holdridge and Gustafson finished the third with two more goals for a 15-8 Coast Guard advantage.

Fulgione scored Emerson's final goal of the game at 12:50 as the Bears closed out the game with a six-goal run for the 21-9 final.

Sophomore goalkeeper Dan Lucas finished with three saves in the cage for the Bears in 45 minutes of play and freshman Matt Reheuser made two saves in his collegiate debut for the fourth quarter.

Malcolm McGrath made 17 saves in between the pipes for Emerson in the loss.

The Bears were dominant on the circle, winning 23 of 33 faceoffs. Coast Guard picked up 55 ground balls, a game-high 12 coming from Brodfuehrer.

Coast Guard will host a NEWMAC semifinal next Saturday, May 1. Final seedings will be announced tomorrow.
