Box Score NEW LONDON, Conn. -- Freshman Kira Wood had 15 of her career-high 27 points in the first quarter as Coast Guard jumped out to a big lead and cruised past host Mitchell 83-63 to improve to 3-0 on the season.
Wood, who had 21 points in the first half, connected on seven of 12 from 3-point range and grabbed seven rebounds in the win.
Jacqueline Ward added 17 points and a career-high 10 rebounds to go with a game-high five assists for her first career double-double while Kyra Hartman (11) and Faith Butler (10) also scored in double figures for the Bears. Hartman added a game-high five steals.
Coast Guard shot 40 percent (28 of 70) in the win while hitting seven of 21 from 3-point range. The Mariners were 23 of 70 (32.9 percent) connecting on just two of 17 from behind the arc. Mitchell turned the ball over 22 times to Coast Guard's 11.
Le'Sandra Turner and Amina Wiley each had 13 points to lead Mitchell.
Coast Guard led 13-8 with 6:53 left in the opening quarter before the Bears used a 19-2 to open up a 32-10 lead with 57 seconds left in the quarter. Wood would score the 10 straight points during the run for the Bears as she finished the quarter with 15 points, hitting 3 of 4 from 3-point range, and Coast Guard led 32-13 after one and 48-34 at halftime.
Wood would knock down two more trifectas in the third quarter and the Bears led 65-48 after three quarters.
Coast Guard beat Mitchell earlier in the season 70-63 at home.
The Bears will close out the season on Saturday at Albertus Magnus with a noon tip.
