Box Score NEW LONDON, Conn.-- Senior Etta Davis tallied her 100th career point with her first of four goals to lead Coast Guard women's lacrosse to a 17-9 season-opening victory over Emerson in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Saturday afternoon.
Freshman Addy Bass and sophomore Gianna Cascio both added two goals and one assist. Freshman Maria del Rosario Chan tallied two goals and five others added a goal each. Bass, del Rosario Chan, and Brenda Anderson registered their first career goals.
Lauren Longstreet and Kelli Mark led Emerson with three goals apiece.
Emerson scored two goals in the opening 10 minutes of play, but the Bears answered with a six-goal run starting with senior Haley McCue at 18:59 and capped off by del Rosario Chan with a man-up goal to give Coast Guard a 5-2 lead. Mark scored for Emerson at 3:34 to bring the Lions within two but the Bears scored two goals in the final 20 seconds, giving Coast Guard a 7-3 advantage at the half.
Emerson fired off five goals in the opening 10 minutes of the second half, tying the game 8-8. Senior Haley Howard sparked a six-goal run for the Bears, extending their lead to 14-8. The Lions added one more goal, but Coast Guard put it away, adding three more in the final three minutes of play to secure the 17-9 victory.
Senior Mary Budri tallied the win in between the pipes for the Bears with six saves. Emerson's goalkeeper Nina Khosla recorded a game-high 19 saves in the loss for the Lions.
Coast Guard held a 19-7 advantage in draw controls and a 40-19 advantage in shots.
The Bears are back in action at home next Saturday, March 27 at 1:00 PM against Springfield on senior day. No fans are allowed in attendance, but the game will be live-streamed on uscgasports.com.
