Box Score WENHAM, Mass.-- Gabrielle Zaffiro had 19 points to lead Amherst to a 70-42 victory over Coast Guard women's basketball on Saturday afternoon at the Gordon Classic. The Bears drop to 2-1 with their first loss of the season, while Amherst improves to 2-0.
Zaffiro was one of three Mammoths in double figures as Reeya Patel had 11 and Dani Valdez added 10 points. Patel led the way on the board with a game-high eight rebounds.
Sophomore Kira Wood (12), Jacqueline Ward (11), and senior Kyra Hartman (10) all scored in double figures for the Bears. Hartman led Coast Guard in rebounds with seven.
After battling back and forth, the teams had a 15-15 first quarter score.
Amherst opened the second quarter with a three-pointer from Zaffiro followed by a layup by Jade Duval to take a five-point lead over the Bears. At 7:04, Wood knocked down a three to bring Coast Guard within two, 22-20. Amherst answered with a 14-4 to take a 36-24 lead before a 39-27 advantage at the half.
The Mammoths scored the opening six points of the half and never looked back, extending their lead 51-33 for the third quarter.
Amherst outscored the Bears 17-11 in the final quarter to take the 70-42 final.
The Bears are back in action on the road next Wednesday, November 17 at 7 PM at Trinity.
