Wolverines Nip Bears in Double Overtime

TOWSON, Md.— Brett Gladstone scored the game-winning goal for Grove City with 1:04 remaining in double overtime to lift the Wolverines, 16-15 past Coast Guard for their first win of the season on Saturday afternoon at Loyola Blakefield High School. The Bears drop to 2-4 on the season and Grove City is 1-2.  

Gladstone scored a game-high seven goals along with three assists to lead Grove City. Jed Speers added four goals and Henry Brannan tallied two more for the Wolverines. Josh Spicher, Michael La Forte, and Jared Hurd all added a goal each in their victory.

Junior Matty Johnson scored a team-high five goals and classmate Will Iorio added three goals and four assists for Coast Guard. Freshman Caleb Holdridge tallied two goals and two assists and senior Ryan Gochar, juniors Eric Schultz and Conor Rowan, and freshman William Kastrud and Gunnar Brodfuehrer all scored a goal each for the Bears.

Gladstone put Grove City on the board first at 13:55. Johnson scored two of his goals back-to-back to take a 2-1 lead with just over 10 minutes in the opening quarter. Grove City scored the following three goals to take a 4-2 lead in the first.

Iorio and Johnson tallied the next two goals to tie the game 4-4. Speers answered at 7:36 to give Grove City a 5-4 advantage. Ioio scored his second of the game on a man-up opportunity at 6:46, to tie it 5-5. Gladstone completed the hat trick at 2:03 to give the Wolverines a 6-5 lead heading into half time.

Grove City opened the third quarter taking a four goal lead through the first six minutes. The Bears scored three goals in the final five minutes of the quarter to tied it up, 11-11. La Forte gave Gove City a 12-11 lead with seven seconds remaining in the quarter.

Rowan and Schultz scored the first two goals of the fourth quarter, giving the Bears a 13-12 lead. The teams traded goals throughout the fourth. Gochar scored his lone goal with 4:30 remaining for a 15-14 advantage but Hurd forced the overtime with his goal at 3:35.

The Wolverines outshot Coast Guard, 4-1 in the opening overtime but the score remained 15-15 to go toWol a double overtime period. Gladstone scored the game-winner with 1:04 left in double overtime for the 16-15 final.

Coast Guard senior goalkeeper Charles McAllister made 11 saves in the loss, while R.J. Miller turned away 13 shots in the victory for Grove City.

The Bears are back in action on Wednesday, March 18 at 7 PM as they travel to SUNY Maritime.
