Box Score NEWPORT NEWS, Va.-- Coast Guard women's lacrosse fell, 16-12 on the road at Christopher Newport on Tuesday afternoon in their second game of the team's spring break trip. The Bears drop to 3-2 on the season, while Christopher Newport improves to 3-4.
Zoe Dyer scored a game-high five goals and added two assists to lead the Captains. Hope Hunter chipped in with four goals and Kesley Winters added three goals and three assists.
Junior Etta Davis scored a team-high four goals and classmate Haley McCue tallied a hat trick. Freshman Gianna Cascio scored twice for the Bears as junior Haley Howard and sophomore Maddie Rizzuto and Katherine Pittman rounded out scoring for Coast Guard with a goal each. Howard also grabbed a team-high seven draw controls and Rizzuto dished out a team-high, three assists.
The Captains jumped up to a 6-0 lead within the first 10 minutes of the game. Cascio put the Bears on the board with her fifth goal of the season at 20:43. Christopher Newport scored two more, before Davis scored the next three goals to finish the half trailing 8-4.
Dyer opened the second half with a goal at 27:50 to give the Captains a 9-4 advantage. Davis and Rizzuto scored the next two goals to bring the Bears within three, 9-6. Alexis Kusada scored at 17:46 that sparked a three-goal run that gave the Captains a solid cushon at 14-7. Coast Guard scored the final three goals of the game but it wasn't enough as Christopher Newport held on to the 16-12 final.
Becca Creekmore made four saves in the victory for Christopher Newport. Coast Guard junior goalkeeper Rebecca Dolan turned away six shots for the Bears.
Both teams were even in draw controls with 15 each but Chrisopher Newport outshot the Bears, 30-23.
The Bears are back in action at home on Wednesday, March 18 at 7 PM against Roger Williams
