Box Score NEW LONDON, Conn.-- Clara Bisson and Kelly Wolin combined for eight goals to lead Connecticut College to a 17-9 victory over Coast Guard women's lacrosse on Saturday afternoon. The Bears drop to 2-1 on the season and the Camels open their season at 1-0.
Along with her four goals, Bisson tallied a game-high seven draw controls, and three assists. Wolin had four goals and two ground balls. Emily Yorns and Hannah Lombard each added a hat trick. Julia Loesch scored twice and Mazey Loomis rounded out scoring for the Camels with a goal.
Sophomore Maddie Rizzuto led Coast Guard with a hat trick and one assist. Juniors Etta Davis and Haley Howard both added two goals. Davis grabbed a team-high five ground balls, and Howard collected a team-high four draw controls. Classmates Mary Ellis Goins and Haley McCue completed scoring for the Bears with one goal apiece.
The Camels opened the game on a 5-0 run through the first 14 minutes of play. Rizzuto put the Bears on the board at 11:29 from freshman Catarina Goncalves to make it 5-1. Connecticut scored the following three goals, including two from Yorns to extend to an 8-1 lead with six minutes remaining in the half. Davis scored a free position shot at 5:14 but the Camels answered with three more in the final minutes of the half to take an 11-2 advantage.
Coast Guard opened the second half with three goals in the opening 10 minutes, cutting their deficit, 11-5. The Camels answered with four more goals from four different goal scorers to take a 15-5 lead. Rizzuto completed her hat trick with 11:29 remaining but the Camels fired away two more, extending their lead 17-6. Goins, Davis, and Howard scored the final three goals of the game for the 17-9 final.
Nina Fazio made five saves for the Camels in the victory. Junior goalkeeper Mary Budri made six saves in her opening 24 minutes of play and classmate Rebecca Dolan finished the game with four saves.
The Camels held a 15-13 advantage in draw controls but Coast Guard had a 24-15 advantage in ground balls.
Coast Guard is back in action on Saturday, March 7 as they travel to Virginia Wesleyan at 4 PM as part of their Spring Break road trip. They will stop at Christopher Newport for a game at 3 PM on Tuesday, March 10.
