McNulty Leads Bears Past RPI

TROY, N.Y.-- Senior Riley McNulty led Coast Guard men's lacrosse with 5 goals to a 16-14 victory over RPI in non-conference action on the road on Wednesday night. Both teams are now 2-1 on the season.

McNulty scored a game-high five goals and one assist to lead the Bears. Junior Matty Johnson added a hat trick as classmate Will Iorio and freshman Taylor Gustafson scored two more apiece. Jake Groff, Caleb Holdridge, Gunnar Brodfuehrer, and Logan Tobias each added a goal in the victory.

Ryan Cole led RPI with four goals, Nicholas Colucci added three goals, and Cooper Urban chipped in with two. Will Hatcher, Connor Schnapp, Owen Putman, and Jason Bram all added a goal for the Engineers.

RPI took a quick 2-0 lead in the opening five minutes of play with goals by Urban and Scnhapp. Johnson gave the Bears their first goal at 11:25 with his third goal of the season. Urban tallied his second of the game for RPI at 9:07 for a 3-1 advantage. Holdridge put away his team-leading 12th goal of the season at 7:07 to bring the Bears within one, 3-2. With 5:36 remaining in the first quarter, Iorio tied the game 3-3. Cole answered for RPI for a 4-3 lead but Brodfueher would win the following face-off and tie it up 4-4 at 4:52. Both teams traded goals to end the quarter tied at 5-5.

McNulty found Johnson at 11:30 for his second of the game, giving Coast Guard a 6-5 lead. McNulty went off as he scored three of his five goals in the second quarter to give the Bears a 9-7 advantage heading into halftime.

RPI opened the third quarter as Schnapp found Putman to cut the Engineers deficit, 9-8. McNulty answered with his fourth of the game with help for Tobias at 11:40, giving the Bears a 10-8 lead. Coast Guard held on to a two goal lead until RPI scored back-to-back goals to tie it 11-11. Gustafson and McNulty gave the Bears two more to end the third period with a 13-11 lead.

Gustafson scored his second of the game and Johnson completed the hat trick to give the Bears a 15-11 lead in the opening five minutes of the quarter. RPI added two more to cut their deficit, 15-13. Iorio added one more for the Bears and Cole scored the final of the game for the, 16-14 final for Coast Guard.

RPI outshot the Bears, 49-43 but Coast Guard won 20-34 faceoffs and picked up 43 ground balls.

Senior goalkeeper Charles McAllister made 13 saves in the victory and improved to 2-1 on the season. Brian Doughty made 10 saves for RPI and drops to 2-1 on his season.

Coast Guard is back in action on Saturday as they travel to #1 Salisbury 1 PM.
