Balanced Attack Leads Bears Past Bridegewater

BRIDGEWATER, Mass.-- Sophomore Katherine Pittman and junior Haley Howard scored two goals apiece to lead Coast Guard women's lacrosse in a non-conference 8-6 victory on the road at Bridgewater State on Tuesday night. The Bears improve to 2-0 on the season, while Bridgewater starts 0-1.

The Bears had six different goal scorers in the victory. Pittman scored two goals and added an assist and Howard put away a pair of goals and added a ground ball. Junior Etta Davis notched her fourth goal of the season along with a game-high five ground balls. Sophomore Maddie Rizzuto, junior Haley McCue, and freshman Catarina Goncalves all added a goal each for the Bears.

Katherine Tracy, Victoria McDonough, Hayley White, Jacqueline DeLorey, Emily Hiller, and Kelsi Brennan all scored a goal each for Bridgewater.

Davis put the Bears on the board first with her fourth goal of the season in the opening two minutes with a free-position goal. Bridgewater scored their first of the game at 20:08 as Katherine Tracy connected with Kelsi Brennan for her first goal of the season. Haley McCue gave the Bears a 2-1 lead with a man-up goal with 6:55 remaining in the half. McDonough and White added two more goals for Bridgewater to end the first half with a 3-2 advantage.

Bridgewater scored the opening goal of the second half at 27:19 as Hiller found Tracy to put away her first goal of the season and extend their lead, 4-2. Coast Guard went on a three goal run with tallies from Goncalves, Rizzuto, and Pittman to take a 5-4 lead. DeLorey answered for the Bears as she tied it for Bridgewater, 5-5 at 8:36 left in the half. Howard gave Coast Guard a 6-5 lead with her third goal of the season with 6:31 left in the half. Hiller answered for Bridgewater to tie the game again at 6-6 with 5:51 remaining. Pittman and Howard scored back-to-back goals for Coast Guard to give the Bears the 8-6 final.

Bridgewater held a 22-23 advantage in shots and an 11-5 edge in draw controls. Coast Guard picked up 20 ground balls compared to Bridgewaters 16.

The NEWMAC defensive athlete of the week, Mary Budri made 10 saves in the victory and is now 2-0 on the season. Bridgewater goalkeeper Hayley Barner turned away nine shots and opens the season 0-1.

The Bears return home in non-conference action against cross-town rival, Connecticut College at 12 PM.
