Box Score NEW LONDON, Conn.-- Freshman Caleb Holdridge scored seven goals to lead Coast Guard men's lacrosse to a 16-6 victory over Manhattanville on Saturday afternoon in the teams home opener. The Bears are now 1-1 to start the season and Mahattanville starts at 0-1.
Holdridge had five goals in the first half alone and added two more in the second half. He also had one assist and four ground balls. Junior Will Iorio recorded his 100th career point in the victory as he had four goals and two assists. Matty Johnson tallied two goals and three ground balls. Senior Ryan Gochar, junior Conor Rowan, freshman Gunnar Brodfuehrer, Taylor Gustafson, and sophomore Logan Tobias all added one goal apiece for the Bears. Paul Mamay had a team-high four caused turnovers, and Tobias was dominant in the face-off and led the Bears with 11 ground balls.
Nick Delia scored a team-high four goals for the Valiants. Nick Cornelia and Will Duval added the other two goals for Manhattanville.
Holdridge got the Bears on the board first at 11:43, with his first of three goals in the quarter. Gochar and Iorio added a goal each in the first to give the Bears a 5-1 advantage. The goal gave Iorio his 100th career point, becoming the fifth player in program history to do so.
Coast Guard continued to explode in the second quarter as Holdridge added two more. Iorio scored his second of the game at 7:50 in the second quarter. Gustafson found Rowan with three second left in the half as Rowan scored to give the Bears a 9-2 advantage at the halftime break.
Gustafson scored his first collegiate goal at 13:26 to open the second half of play for the Bears, 10-2. Iorio and Johnson added two more for a 12-2 advantage. Duval scored the lone goal of the half for Mahattanville at 3:10 to cut the deficit 12-3. Coast Guard added four more goals in the third quarter for a 16-3 lead.
Iorio put away his fourth of the game to open the final quarter with a 17-3 lead. Manhattanville answered, as Delia and Cornelia scored back-to-back goals to bring it, 17-5. Brodfuehrer scored the final goal for the Bears with just under five minutes remaining and Delia scored the final goal of the game at 4:05 for the 18-6 final.
Coast Guard outshot Manhattanville 53-31, and won 21 of 27 face-offs.
Senior goalkeeper Charles McAllister made nine saves for the Bears and improved to 1-1 on the season. Jason Frezza turned away 11 shots and opens the season 0-1 for the Valiants.
The Bears are back in action on Wednesday, February 26 at 5 PM on the road at RPI.
