Box Score NEW LONDON, Conn.-- Coast Guard women's lacrosse opened their season with a 14-4 victory over Johnson and Wales at home on Wednesday night.
Junior Etta Davis, freshman Gianna Cascio, and Catarina Goncalves all scored three goals to lead the Bears to their first win of the season. Sophomore Maddie Rizzuto added one goal with a team-high three assists. Junior Haley Howard tallied two goals, classmate Haley McCue added a goal and two assists, and Mary Ellis Goins scored one goal with one assist for the Bears. Cascio had a team-high five ground balls and four caused turnovers.
Marley Medina led Johnson and Wales with two goals, five ground balls, five draw controls, and five caused turnovers. Reagan Wildman and Marcela Rose both added a goal each for the Wildcats.
McCue opened the game with a free-position goal at 28:08. No one scored for 13 minutes until McCue found Rizzuto for a man-down goal at 15:44. The Bears shutout the Wildcats in the first half 5-0.
Coast Guard opened the half with three more goals to take an 8-0 lead. Medina put the Wildcats on the board on a free-position goal at 18:26. Wildman and Medina scored back-to-back goals for the Wildcats to cut their deficit to 9-3 but Coast Guard answered with four goals of their own to take a 13-3 lead. In the final minute, Marcela Rose scored a free-position goal for Johnson and Wales but Goncalves scored her third of the night off a free-position shot for the 14-4 final.
Coast Guard held a 12-7 advantage in draw controls and outshot the Wildcats 29-18.
Junior goalkeeper Mary Budri made 10 saves in the victory and collected four ground balls. Johnson and Wales goalkeeper Cassidy O'Hara also made 10 saves in the loss for the Wildcats.
Coast Guard is back in action on Tuesday, February 25 at 7 PM at Bridgewater State.
