Box Score ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – Micah Ballew had a game-high five goals leading Elizabethtown to a 13-8 win over Coast Guard in the season opener for both teams.
Ballew had three straight first quarter goals as the Blue Jays took a 3-1 lead.
Freshman Caleb Holdridge led the Bears with four goals and two assists in his first collegiate game while Will Iorio had two goals and two assists.
Iorio scored the first goal of the game with Holdridge picking up his first collegiate assist with 9:52 left in the first quarter.
Ballew would score three straight goals giving the Blue Jays at 3-1 lead with 3:38 left in the first.
Holdridge scored with Iorio assisting with 2:53 left in the first, the final goal of the opening quarter.
E'town's Nick Cost would score 49 seconds into the second quarter and assist on Thomas Palen's goal with 2:10 left in the half to give the Blue Jays a 5-2 lead at the half.
Ballew found the back of the net to start the scoring in the third quarter pushing the lead to 6-2.
Holdridge scored his first collegiate goal with 8:38 left in the third added another just over five minutes later as the Bears closed to 6-4.
Riley McNulty got his first goal of the season with 1:48 left with Holdridge assisting with 1:48 left in the third making the score 6-5.
Danny Gilbert would score just 11 seconds later for the Blue Jays to make the score 7-5 heading to the fourth.
The Jays struck 41 seconds into the fourth on a goal by Danny Gilbert before Holdridge and Gunnar Brodfueher scored just nine seconds apart to make the score 8-7 with 12:26 left.
Cameron Gooding scored for the Blue Jays before Iorio answered with 10:46 left cutting the deficit to 9-8.
Elizabethtown would score the final four goals of the game.
Tom Mahoney had 16 saves in goal for the Blue Jays while Charles McAllister had 10 saves for the Bears.
The Blue Jays won 18 of the 24 faceoffs including 13 of 15 in the second half.
The Bears held a 43-39 edge in shots while E'Town held a 35-25 advantage in ground balls.
Coast Guard beat Elizabethtown 10-1 in the season opener last season.
The Bears are back in action on Saturday when they host Manhattanville in the home opener at 1:00.
