Wood Leads Bears Past Mount Holyoke

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – Breanna Wood had the best game of her career as she had a career-high 20 points to go with a team-high 14 rebounds as Coast Guard shook off a slow start using a 24-2 run in the second half to beat Mount Holyoke 69-48 in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game.

The Bears improve to 13-6 overall and 2-2 in conference play while Mount Holyoke drops to 1-18 overall and 0-4 in the NEWMAC.

It was the fourth double-double of the season for Wood. Annabella Farabaugh added 15 points while Kyra Hartman was also in double figures with 13 points in the win for Coast Guard, which shot 30 percent in the win (27 of 90) while making 4 of 17 from 3-point range.

Mount Holyoke jumped out to a 7-1 lead in the first four minutes of the game. Coast Guard started slow shooting 3 of 25 from the field in the first quarter trailing 12-10 after one with Wood having eight of the Bears 10 points.

The Lyons led 24-20 with 4:09 left in the first half before the Bears ran off nine straight capped on a layup by Farabaugh with 1:06 left for a 29-24 lead.

Coast Guard led 29-26 at the half. The Bears were 11 of 50 (22 percent) from the floor in the first half, but only turned the ball over three times while Mount Holyoke had 14 first half turnovers.

The Bears scored the first six points of the second half to open up a 35-26 lead with 7:32 left in the third quarter. 

Mount Holyoke closed to 37-34 with 4:25 left in the third before the Bears exploded with a 19-2 run to end the quarter taking a commanding 56-36 lead.

The Bears would score the first five points of the fourth quarter to cap the 24-2 run taking a 61-36 lead with 8:03 left.

The Lyons were 20 of 55 from the floor (36.4 percent) and hit five of 14 from behind the arc. Mount Holyoke was hurt by 29 turnovers while the Bears turned the ball over a season-low eight times.

The Bears are back in action on Saturday at WPI in a NEWMAC game at 1:00.
